Job Description
The Shift Supervisor is responsible for leading the team operating the plant during his/her shift. This position plans and coordinates the activities of operators and workers. It is qualified to perform the functions and lead the work of others.
Main Responsibilities:
- Leads all shift activities in the operation of automatic and semi-automatic machines and related equipment, including pumps, engines, generators, valves, gates, mixers, conveyors, blowers, chemical feed equipment, and sludge processing equipment used to treat wastewater to meet City By-law limits. Makes independent decisions concerning process control changes.
- Directs the activities of all employees assigned to their shift.
- Trains operators in plant procedures and practices through the use of the “On The Job” training program.
- Monitors flow meters, gauges, flow ratios, pressures and related controls through the SCADA system, computer terminals and programmable logic control units in the assigned area.
- Monitors and records operating conditions, observations and data in a daily shift log.
- Ensures compliance with the predefined HS procedures in place and conformance to process specifications.
- Diagnoses basic operational problems and takes corrective action per procedure. Verifies and reports suspected malfunctions and variances to their Supervisor and/or the Plant Manager, and takes corrective actions, as necessary.
- Performs shift routines, preventative maintenance and maintenance-related work as assigned.
- Performs field tests (chemical, physical and biological) in order to pace chemical dosages for process control units or alter unit processes. Samples of sludge and solid streams for the determination of solids balancing.
- Monitors process chemical supplies daily and places or adjusts chemical orders to ensure continued plant operations.
- Performs minor maintenance, but not limited to, routine preventive maintenance, lubrication and minor adjustments as required and as per OEM recommendations;
- Operates MHE equipment and vehicles for plant operational purposes.
- Practices good housekeeping in assigned areas and properly disposes of waste according to safety and environmental policies.
- Collaborate with the maintenance department to ensure safety and environmental policies are followed.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
Educational Background:
- Graduate with a minimum of post-secondary education.
- Graduated from a Heavy Equipment Operator Program - Training in learning to maintain and properly use heavy equipment would be an asset.
- Ability to perform basic math and calculations.
- Licensed to operate a Counterbalance forklift truck and Tip Floow loader.
- At least six months of experience in a relevant position and environment.
- Experience with a variety of machinery, vehicles, material handling equipment, hand and power tools preferred. Must demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily.
Job Skills:
- Ability to perform basic math and calculations.
- Licensed to operate a Counterbalance forklift truck and Tip Floow loader.
- At least six months of experience in a relevant position and environment.
- Experience with a variety of machinery, vehicles, material handling equipment, hand and power tools preferred. Must demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily.
- Reliable and dependable on start and finish times as it impacts the operations.
- Reading text, Document use, Numeracy, Writing, Oral communication, and attention to detail. Good use of the English language. Deadline-oriented. Work well with others.
- Good hand-eye coordination. Repetitive motions required. Rotating throughout the facility as required.
Work Environment:
Permanent position, offered on a full-time basis, with working hours from Monday to Friday.
