Job Description
MRC Consultants and Transaction Advisers, our subsidiary based in Madrid specialises in independent, high-quality advice through the full project cycle, from early feasibility to execution and post-implementation evaluation, with a focus on decarbonisation, renewable energy integration, energy storage and climate-resilient infrastructure.
We are seeking a Senior Consultant to join our Economic Studies & Regulation team in Madrid.
You will provide strategic and analytical advice on energy markets and regulation for leading international clients, including major IFIs.
You will also contribute to our growing work in financial modelling and green finance for energy investment projects and PPAs, which is a priority area for the team.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct energy market assessments, economic analyses and valuations for due diligence and project development.
Design and implement tariff frameworks and cost-of-service studies for regulated utilities.
Deliver IFI-funded regulatory and market reform assignments (World Bank, AFD, AfDB, EU).
Build financial models for IFIs and investors on international investment projects and PPAs, to international standards.
Support green and sustainable finance advisory, a growing focus for the team.
Provide strategic advice on energy sector business models and investment decisions.
Analyse wholesale, balancing and ancillary power markets and their platforms and mechanisms.
Present complex analyses to diverse audiences in English and other languages.
Identify market opportunities and contribute to business development.
Qualifications
Technical Skills
- MSc in Economics, Finance, or a related quantitative field.
- 5 to 10 years of experience in energy market analysis and regulation, with work experience within Europe.
- Deep understanding of wholesale energy markets, regulatory frameworks, and market design.
- Proven knowledge of power market platforms and their operations (wholesale, balancing, ancillary markets, day-ahead, and intraday mechanisms).
- Strong quantitative and qualitative analytical skills with experience in economic and financial modeling.
- Experience with data analytics tools (Excel; Python/R are a plus).
- Desirable
- Experience in green and sustainable finance, and PPA structuring.
- Experience with International Financial Institutions (IFIs) and development banks (World Bank, AFD, AfDB, ADB, EU).
- Knowledge of energy transition topics, including renewable integration, decarbonization, and digitalization.
Soft Skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication in English, and fluency in at least one other language (Spanish, French are preferred).
- Self-motivated and proactive, with strong problem-solving abilities.
- Willingness to travel occasionally, worldwide.
