Job Description
Position Purpose:
Performs a variety of duties including inspecting & cleaning sewer pipes, manholes, lift station and treatment plants. Required to operate and maintain the wastewater collection network as well as responding to collection network emergencies.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
- Operation of acoustic (SLRAT) equipment, pole camera equipment & pumps used for by-pass pumping operations.
- Observes all on-the-job safety regulations.
- Ensures operational compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Routine cleaning and general housekeeping duties in work areas as assigned.
- Operation of assigned company vehicle (Van or Pickup Truck – no CDL license required).
- Perform and document pre and post vehicle inspections.
- Prepare the truck for the day, making sure all necessary equipment is on the truck.
- Clean the truck daily and may on occasion assist the Operator with basic truck corrective actions.
- Set up of traffic work zone with various traffic control devices.
- Prepare the job site, opening manholes.
- Participate in the daily tailgate meetings in addition to various required training classes.
- Fill vacuum and jet flusher truck tanks with water from fire hydrants.
- Inspect all equipment at the beginning and end of the day.
- Maintains and operates all equipment with care.
- Reports all accidents, incidents, injuries and defective equipment to a supervisor.
- Sewer manhole entry may be required.
Work Environment:
- Work is performed both inside and outside with exposure to all kinds of weather conditions.
- Incumbents may be occasionally exposed to some noise, silica, dust, fumes, smoke, gasses, greases, oils, electrical energy, solvents and vibration.
- Incumbents may work on slippery/uneven surfaces, around machinery with moving parts, moving objects/vehicles, ladder/scaffolding, below ground and may be exposed to water or other liquid materials.
- Maintain a high level of focus on health, safety and environment, ensuring safety within all activities.
Qualifications
Education/Experience/Background:
- High School Diploma/GED is required.
- 4+ years of experience working in a large Collection Network and knowledge of associated assets.
- Experience performing tasks of a Laborer in a Collection network including using and assisting in the use of specialized inspection and cleaning tools and equipment such as high-pressure jetting trucks, CCTV & pole cameras, SLRAT, Vacuum trucks and pumps.
- Experience as part of a crew performing the duties of a Laborer in a Collection Network including setting up traffic work zones with various traffic control devices including signs, cones, barricades, barrels and following the required safety precautions.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Must work a scheduled shift and be able to participate in the Standby rotation to respond to off hour and weekend emergency calls.
- Must be able to work outside standard shift hours to address areas of the network being maintained during overnight hours.
- Ability to understand and carry out written and/or verbal work orders and assignments.
- Must be computer savvy and work within department software.
- Assist equipment operators, CCTV operators and inspection laborers with various inspection and cleaning equipment in the daily functions assigned.
- Ability to visually inspect manholes and sewer lines.
- Ability to diagnose sewer line condition (operational and structural) and report it in a written/computer-based work order form.
Required Certification/Licenses/Training:
- Valid NYS Driver’s license, NYS CDL license preferred with ability to meet all risk management guidelines.
Physical Requirements:
- While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with other employees.
- The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and use all senses.
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.

Pay Rate: $56.95 per hour.
