Job Description

Position Purpose: 

A Grade 2 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator in California is typically a journey-level role responsible for the skilled operation and maintenance of treatment facilities to ensure compliance with state and federal discharge regulations.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Monitor and control the flow of wastewater, sludge, and effluent through activated sludge treatment processes.
  • Operate, lubricate, and perform routine repairs on pumps, valves, electric motors, aerators, and blowers.
  • Read and interpret gauges, meters, and control panels; access and utilize SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems to track operational data.
  • Collect samples and perform standardized physical, chemical, and biological tests (e.g., pH, chlorine residual, dissolved oxygen).
  • Maintain accurate shift logs and operational records to ensure the plant meets NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) permit requirements.
  • Safely receive, store, and connect chlorine cylinders, polymers, and other hazardous chemicals used in treatment.
  • Provide technical guidance and on-the-job training to lower-level operators and Operators-in-Training (OIT).

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background: 

  • High School Diploma/GED is required.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training: 

  • This position requires a Grade II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB).

Additional Information

Pay Range: $42.00 to $46.00 per hour.
