Job Description

The Housekeeper performs housekeeping services for the Swan Hills Treatment Centre (SHTC) plant site. The housekeeping services play a critical role in mitigating cross-contamination of hazardous-waste products between the controlled areas of the plant site. Housekeeping services includes daily cleaning of all office buildings on plant site and the cleaning of company-rented accommodation in the town of Swan Hills as required. The Housekeeping Department has responsibility for the laundrying of all company-provided clothing (both indoor and outdoor) for both employees and contractors on site as all work clothing worn on site is not allowed to leave the plant site.

This position operates within a COR, ISO 17025 certified, and OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 conforming plant environment and is expected to comply with all regulatory requirements. The facility operates on a 24/7 basis.

Main Responsibilities:

The duties of the Housekeeper are as follows, but not limited to:

  1. Understands and promotes the Company’s, the Division’s, the Plant’s, and the Department’s mission statement, values, and strategic goals.
  2. Proactively promotes through example a safe work ethic, attitude, and workplace. Complies with all health and safety policies, standards, and procedures to achieve a safe work environment and safety for all staff and visitors as well as the Company’s, Client’s and Regulatory Agencies safe work objectives and requirements.
  3. Maintains effective working relationships and communications with peers, management, and other Company departments and staff. Effectively resolves any conflicts in a timely and respectful manner to achieve positive and healthy working relationships and workplace environment.
  4. Promotes a quality-first work ethic and attitude to provide a service of the highest standard achievable.
  5. Maintains confidentiality to comply with all regulatory requirements and Company Privacy and Confidentiality policies and procedures.
  6. Safely operates company owned, leased, or rented vehicles and/or mobile equipment .
  7. Stocks all required supplies such as paper towel, booties, janitorial supplies, etc.
  8. Orders all housekeeping supplies.
  9. Distributes new Level 1 & 2 clothing to Company employees and contractors. Orders clothing as required
  10. Assigns lockers as needed.
  11.  Supports housekeeping staff with assigned tasks as required, including, but not limited to:
    1. Sweeping and washing of all floors in required buildings
    2. Emptying of garbage
    3. Washing and folding of laundry
    4. Cleaning of washrooms
    5. Wiping down and tidying of kitchens/lunchrooms
    6. Steam cleaning of office carpets & upholstery
    7. Striping and re-waxing of floors where feasable
    8. Washing of walls and windows
  12. Organizes clothing and PPE for plant tours.
  13. Actively supports other initiatives of the Plant to promote a healthy and positive work environment and enhance employee morale and engagement.
  14. Completes other duties as assigned.

LEADERSHIP

  1. Provides pro-active leadership and supervision of all staff resources within Housekeeping team to maintain a functional team in line with overall Plant forecasts and Company policies.  Develops, coaches and mentors personnel.
  2. Supports department manager in setting Team’s operational goals and objectives and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Informs housekeeping team of Corporate and Plant’s goals, objectives, and KPIs. Monitors that progress is continuously being made towards the Company, Plant and Team’s goals, objectives and KPIs.
  3. Directs and supervises the duties of the Housekeeping Team. Identifies and recommends changes to staffing levels to achieve Team’s objectives. Supports orientation of new staff per Company policies and procedures.
  4. Coordinates annual training program and executes once approved.  Coordinates training activities and monitors that all staff are adequately trained and demonstrate effective skills to achieve and maintain quality standards and production targets as well as the Company’s and Team’s objectives.   Verifies documentation of training compliance is complete and accurate.
  5. Monitors and conducts evaluations of personnel performance and addresses any concerns or infractions in a timely and respectful manner as per Company policy and practices while focusing on consistency, accountability and responsibility.  Provides ongoing feedback to all direct reports based on observable behaviors and maintains log for input when conducting annual staff performance assessments to ensure a fair and equitable assessment.  Conducts formal performance assessments and follows-up on progress towards goals and objectives and KPIs.  Reviews position descriptions and Job Hazard Assessments (JHA) with direct reports annually or as required and makes changes as necessary.
  6. Plans and manages daily schedule of Housekeeping staff to enable all office buildings on site as well as company-rented accommodations in the town of Swan Hills are cleaned on daily basis or as required. 
  7. Seeks input to identify issues and opportunities to enhance staff job satisfaction and retention and provides recommendations for new initiatives to management or Corporate for approval.
  8. Acts as a coach/ or facilitator as required in all personnel matters within the Housekeeping Team.
  9. Monitors that all staff documentation is current and accurate and submitted in a timely manner to achieve Company objectives including minimizing Company liability.
  10. Authorizes direct reports’ timesheets (verifying that they are in compliance with company policy and regulatory requirements) and leave of absences.

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

  1. Supports Management to control financial performance of the Department including setting annual budget, daily controls, and targets within the Company’s policies and practices. 
  2. Manages Client’s projects within scope of responsibility to achieve time and budget expectations.
  3. Makes recommendations for the Housekeeping annual budget  in conjunction with the Maintenance Manager.
  4. Evaluates and recommends new Housekeeping purchases.
  5. Submits requisitions for approval of housekeeping products.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Experience: 

  • Minimum of high school diploma.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ related experience.
  • Preference for 3 to 5 years’ related experience.
  • Previous experience within an industrial plant and/or regulated environment is a definite asset.
  • Prior supervisory experience is a definite asset.
  • Effective customer service attitude and commitment to providing exceptional customer service and quality results.
  • Effective interpersonal and conflict management skills to facilitate working effectively with wide range and number of people, including peers and manager, employees, and other departments, divisions, and management within all levels of the organization.
  • Effective negotiation, persuasion, and listening skills to facilitate successful resolution of employee and management concerns and requests.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to facilitate and promote open discussions and understanding.
  • Effective time management, decision-making, and planning and organizing skills.
  • Attentiveness to details and ability to manage a diverse workload within a fast-paced environment with changing multiple priorities and frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team as well as independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proven organizational and creative-problem solving skills.
  • Computer competency in MS Office applications and ability to access and input data in Ivara.
  • Ability to work outside of regular business hours to deliver Housekeeping support, primarily during plant shutdowns or emergency situations as plant operates on a 24/7 basis.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality to comply with all regulatory requirements and Company Privacy and Confidentiality policies and procedures.
  • Ability to complete all conditions of employment including criminal record check, current and clean Class 5 driver’s license, and pre-employment medical.

Hours of Work:

The  Housekeeping Supervisor is eligible to participate in a Compressed Work Week Schedule, thereby working four, ten-hour days each week.  To ensure operational requirements and coverage is achieved at all times, incumbent may be requested to occasionally change/adapt their hours.  Manager may designate hours of work within the following options: Monday to Thursday or Tuesday to Friday; and 6:00 am to 4:30 pm or 7:00 am to 5:30 pm with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. Position is based on a 40-hour work week.  With prior approval, incumbent has flexibility to adapt hours to meet business and personal needs.

On occasion will be required to work outside of regular business hours to deliver Housekeeping support, primarily during plant shutdowns or emergency situations as plant operates on a 24/7 basis.

 

 WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. Equipment and Tools Used:

  • Housekeeping equipment.

2. Physical or mental demands and activities:

  • Position has been classified as a Security Sensitive position in accordance with company policy.
  • Continually managing priorities to meet operational objectives.
  •  Achieving expected performance standards while maintaining an efficient and safe working environment.
  • High volume workload requiring both sound technical knowledge and ability to provide exceptional customer service.

3.  Challenging conditions normally associated with job (e.g. physical hazards, rotating shifts, shop conditions, excessive travel as an integral part of the duties performed, etc.).  It is assumed that all reasonable and legal Occupational Health & Safety practices are in place and are adhered to.   In addition, PPE is to be worn as per company standards and procedures.  Refer to the safety section and safe work plan sections of procedures for specific information. Refer to the position’s Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) for the correlation or activity, risk, and controls.

  • Regular trips into plant; may be required to climb ladders, work at heights or in confined spaces, and be exposed to various industrial hazards such as but not limited to noise, fumes, chemicals and hazardous waste. 
  • Exposed to PCBs, Compressed/flammable gas, mobile/ moving/rotating equipment and electrical hazards.
  • Exposed to Hot and Cold working environments.
  • Required to wear respirator and/or breathing apparatus while in designated areas of the plant and/or laboratory.
  • Despite the relatively low risk of exposure to potential waste contaminants, participation in the SHTC employee health monitoring program is required.
  • Works with cleaning chemicals on a daily basis.
  • Some periodic heavy lifting when moving supplies.
