Job Description
Position Purpose:
The Central Utility Plant Maintenance Technician is responsible for the preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and support of mechanical, electrical, and control systems within the hospital’s central utility plant. This position supports the continuous and reliable operation of boilers, chillers, HVAC systems, refrigeration equipment, emergency power systems, and related infrastructure critical to patient care and hospital operations.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, compressors, HVAC equipment, heat exchangers, and associated piping systems.
- Assist with maintenance and repair of refrigeration systems, air handling units, and climate control equipment.
- Support maintenance of emergency power systems, including generators, switchgear, and transfer systems.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and control system issues to minimize downtime.
- Conduct inspections and testing of plant equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, and equipment logs using a CMMS.
- Assist Central Plant Operators during system startups, shutdowns, and emergency situations.
- Coordinate with contractors and vendors during repairs, upgrades, and inspections.
- Follow hospital safety, infection control, lockout/tagout, and regulatory compliance procedures.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of plant areas and mechanical spaces.
- Participate in on-call rotation and respond to after-hours emergencies as required.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
- Ability to work in hot, cold, noisy, and industrial environments.
Qualifications
Education/Experience/Background:
- High School Diploma/GED is required.
- Minimum of 2–4 years of experience in plant maintenance, HVAC, or industrial mechanical systems, preferably in a hospital or large institutional environment.
- Experience working in a hospital or healthcare facility.
- Experience using building automation systems (BAS) and CMMS software.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Working knowledge of mechanical systems, basic electrical principles, and hand/power tools.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and equipment manuals.
- Familiarity with boilers, chillers, and refrigeration systems.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Understanding of workplace safety and regulatory compliance (OSHA, NFPA).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced, critical environment.
- Willingness to work rotating shifts, overtime, and emergency call-ins.
Required Certification/Licenses/Training:
- Completion of a technical, vocational, or apprenticeship program in mechanical, HVAC, electrical, or industrial maintenance preferred.
- Relevant trade certifications (HVAC, electrical, mechanical, or boiler/refrigeration licenses).
- Successful completion of background check, and health screening.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds.
